The live service market has and always will be an incredibly difficult one to crack into. Every year new live service focused games launch and every year live service games close. That’s not to say new games can’t succeed, but it is becoming increasingly difficult to do so and many of those that fail struggle to do anything that make them stand apart from their competitors.
Ubisoft has announced that XDefiant will be closing on 3rd June 2025. As of 3rd December 2024, Ubisoft has stated that XDefiant will be accepting no new players.
The good news is that in the meantime, Ubisoft has still plans to launch the third XDefiant season to anyone that already owns the game and is playing. In addition, Ubisoft are offering refunds to anyone that purchased the most expensive version of XDefiant, which is called the Ultimate Founders Pack as well as anyone that purchased DLC and in game currency.
This news comes after several years of concerns around Ubisoft following a number of games launching to below expected sales including three this year; Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown and most recently Star Wars: Outlaws. The share price in Ubisoft has seen significant losses this past year and there are concerns about the future of the company.
