On 14th February 2024, we saw for the first time since their initial release in 1996 beginning with Tomb Raider first for the Sega Saturn and then for PlayStation and PC, the first three games in the Tomb Raider franchise not only come to modern consoles and PC, but also receive an overhaul in both looks and control schemes.
Originally developed by long gone Core Design, the remasters were handled by Aspyr whom have a somewhat shaky time of things with releases. A notable example was the much beloved and wanted ports of the original two Star Wars Battlefront games from the PlayStation 2 era. Released March 2024, these games have still not been fully addressed despite numerous patches. However, luckily the Tomb Raider games did receive a lot more care and attention and it shows.
We are hopeful that the next three games in the Tomb Raider franchise receive the same level of attention when being remastered when they release on 14th February 2025.
Aspyr have another couple of remasters in the works, and we are looking forward to their release, though once again cautiously hoping they are done right and not require numerous patches. Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1&2 Remastered will be releasing 10th December 2024 for all current generation consoles and PC.
Originally developed by Crystal Dynamics, Soul Reaver released in 1999 for PlayStation, Dreamcast and PC while the sequel released in 2001 for PlayStation 2 and PC. This remaster will much like with the Tomb Raider remasters, see the ability to play using either original graphics or the new improved visuals, a new control scheme should you wish to not struggle with the original, improved camera controls, a map and compass, a night and day cycle which apparently was planned but never implemented in the original and a few other features including photo mode.
