Sega has a treasure trove of amazing franchises that that for the most part have not seen a new release since they were in the console market. After years of campaigning from many fans, Sega released a trailer at The Game Awards in 2023 revealing five franchises are being bought back with new games. Though no names were announced, we do know that we will be getting new entries in Crazy Taxi, Shinobi, Jet Set Radio, Streets of Rage and Golden Axe.
We maybe able to add another franchise to that list of a recent trademark and copyright are anything to go by. Sega has took out both trademarks and copyrights for Ecco the Dolphin and Ecco.
Between 1992 when Ecco the Dolphin launched for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis and Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future in 2000 for the Sega Dreamcast, there was four games released. A fifth game titled Ecco II: Sentinels of the Universe was in development in 2001 for the Dreamcast but was ultimately cancelled.
Considering we still have not seen anything from the current five known games Sega have in development, we may well have a while to wait before Ecco the Dolphin gets revealed assuming it’s real.
