Sonic Team Producer Considers Prospect of Remaking Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)

Sonic the Hedgehog has been one of the most well known video game franchises since it first exploded onto the scene way back in 1991 as Sega’s second attempt at rivalling Nintendo’s Mario after Alex Kidd did so badly. Though Alex Kidd in Shinobi world on the Sega Master System is an excellent game.

The first Sonic the Hedgehog is by far the best selling game on the Mega Drive/Genesis, selling 15 million copies, though it should be said that while it was available to purchase on store shelves, it was also bundled with the console itself. However, Sonic the Hedgehog through both aggressive and clever marketing and no doubt countless of in store demos, is the reason more than anything the sales of the Mega Drive/Genesis catapulted Sega into such a strong lead over Nintendo.

Not surprisingly, the second best selling game for that same console was the sequel to Sonic the Hedgehog, aptly titled Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Exact sales numbers are a little bit vague but it’s at least 7 million. The third entry in the franchise for the Mega Drive/Genesis sold 4 million, which shows that although hype around the first game was strong, it was definitely seeing a downward trend in sales with each subsequent release.

However, this article isn’t about the good Sonic games. This is about the worst game in the whole franchise, as of time of writing. There are actually two games that spring to mind when thinking about the worst game in the franchise, assuming we just stick to the mainline games and not include spinoffs. The first is Sonic the Hedgehog which is often referred to as Sonic 06 and the second was Sonic Boom: Rise of the Lyrics which was exclusive to the Wii U.

Shun Nakamura recently revealed he would find it appealing for Sonic Team to look at remaking Sonic 06 during a fan event in Indonesia. It’s important to note that this was a response to a question asking what Sonic Team will be doing next and whether they’d ever ever look to remake older games such as the Sonic Adventure games etc. Therefore, this is not itself Mr Nakamura stating that this would ever happen.

There are a couple of questions we should be asking ourselves about such an idea to remake arguably the worst game in the Sonic franchise. First is, why would anyone want to touch that game as a potential official remake? Even if the game wasn’t broken, it’s not a good game underneath it all. You would essentially be starting from scratch and at that point, you might as well create something entirely different.

The second question is, if Sonic Team is wanting to do more remakes, we assume alongside new entries, then why not look at what everyone has been asking for over the past few years? The priority should be to look at remaking both Sonic Adventures and Sonic Adventures 2.
