UPDATE – 14th NOVEMBER 2024:
Rockstar Games has now launched the same patch for Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy: Definitive Edition that was previously available on current generation consoles, for last generation and Nintendo Switch. This means the patch it now available to download on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S, Nintendo Switch and PC.
ORIGINAL:
It has been a long while since we last heard anything regarding the remaster collection Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy: Definitive Edition that launched back November 2021.
Developed by outsourced company Grove Street Studios rather than in house at Rockstar Games, the aim was to keep the original games in tact while giving them a make over in the visual and controls. Unfortunately what we ended up with was a release plagued with many problems ranging from comical to serious. In addition the lack of a huge number of songs from the radio stations made this anything but definitive.
Over the following year, Grove Street Studios released numerous patches that to a degree got some of the issues fixed. However it all then went silent. That is of course until now as a brand new patch has been released.
So what does the new patch entail? Some of the features have been things fans of the original trilogy have been begging for over the years since the remasters released. These include the following:
Classic lighting as seen in the original trilogy, fog is back, changes to the combat, updates to the character models, the ability to fly through clouds, you can pause in cut scenes, different weathers, fixed the crouching, parallax interiors are gone and most interesting is the name Grove Street Studios has been removed from the studio list and main menu.
That last point suggests a change in developer, which could be why nothing has been heard regarding the trilogy in so long. Perhaps we can see more improvements on the way? Maybe now Rockstar Games and their parent company, Take Two Interactive are taking things seriously? Who knows.
Unfortunately this update is currently only available to those playing on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X & S and PC. If you own this on the last generation consoles or Nintendo Switch as many will do, you are out of luck. Hopefully this will be coming soon as it is not a case of forgotten about a large number of people that bought the game. More so as the initial reveal was in a Nintendo Direct so to leave out that particular console would be pretty poor.
We will update this article if and hopefully when the updates come to the remaining consoles.
