Dragon Quest III 2D-HD Remake Ships Two Million

Square Enix has not had perhaps the greatest run in releases over the years, in part due to rising costs in development, but also perhaps in part because of high expectations that just can’t be fulfilled. There is also the added argument that some games, such as Final Fantasy, being exclusive to one platform has not helped with the sales either.

Recently, Square Enix has stated that going forward, future releases will be multiplatform which should help to some degree hit the lofty sales targets.

However, there are other problems that are perhaps just as troubling for Square Enix such as the pursuit of the next ever green live service game. Currently by far the biggest live service game Square Enix has is Final Fantasy XIV which first launched on PC back on 27th August 2013 with PlayStation and Xbox ports following over the subsequent years. We wouldn’t be too shocked if a port for the Nintendo Switch successor console is also in the works.

The problem with live service games are that, Square Enix has struggled to find much success in this market outside of Final Fantasy XIV as has been evident by the latest to close down, Foamstars which only launched earlier in the year.

It is therefore good news that Square Enix has announced Dragon Quest III 2D-HD Remake has shipped two million across all platforms it is available on. This figure also includes digital downloads.

We know that in Japan alone, Dragon Quest III 2D-HD Remake is pushing one million in sales, which would suggest that the remaining million is spread rather thinly across the rest of the world, though we hope to hear in depth regional sales in the future to give a better idea of exactly how this game has done.

Dragon Quest III 2D-HD Remake is available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S as well as PC. The 2D-HD remakes of both the first and second Dragon Quest games will be releasing in 2025 though no confirmed date has been set.
