After the both critical and commercial success of Hitman in 2016, the reboot of a long running series of games which has also spawned 2 movies, Square Enix announced that IO Interactive were to seek potential third parties about acquiring the studio. One month late on 16th June 2017 IO Interactive announced that they had become an independent company after a management buyout though the financial details were not disclosed.
Two further games in the Hitman reboot followed with the final game releasing on 20th January 2021 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S as well as PC. However, it’s what was announced in November 2020 that we are most interested in, as IO Interactive revealed Project 007.
It has been four years since the reveal of Project 007 and we have yet to see or hear anything from the developers, but we do know some details regarding what to expect. For starters, it will be an original story rather than based on any of the films, likewise James Bond will also not be basing their likeness on any of the film actors that have portrayed the character. This could potentially open the doors for a character creator instead of a pre-designed character.
We also know that IO Interactive spent two years preparing a pitch for the 007 James Bond license working under the knowledge that the current license owners are not too keen on the amount of violence that’s been seen in previous games. Assuming that Project 007 is using the same engine IO Interactive used for Hitman, we can see a world where stealth plays a large part of how you go about doing the various missions, with violence more of an last resort tactic.
There is a chance that we will finally see something in 2025, not necessarily a gameplay trailer but certainly a more in depth teaser trailer for Project 007 knowing there’s a good chance the game is at one to two more years away from release. However, a full name reveal would be an almost guaranteed thing to see in any trailer releasing in 2025.
We don’t know how likely any real significant updates on Project 007 are for 2025, be it a trailer or just a press release providing further game details. But we are hoping for at least something.
