It is nearing the end of the year 2024 and that means we are not too far away from this year’s The Game Awards hosted by Geoff Keighley. We have yet to hear the names of the games that will be nominated for each category on Monday 18th November 2024.
The Game Awards has updated their website that states remasters, remakes and even DLC can be considered for the Game of the Year award. It is the latter that is stirring up some serious questions and debate across the internet.
It is suspected by many, though it has not yet been confirmed or denied, that Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree could well be the reason for this update being made.
The following is taken directly from The Game Awards website under the FAQs:
Are DLCs, Expansion Packs and Remakes/Remasters Eligible?
“The Game Awards aims to recognize the best creative and technical work each year, irrespective of the format of that content’s release. Expansion packs, new game seasons, DLCs, remakes and remasters are eligible in all categories, if the jury deems the new creative and technical work to be worthy of a nomination. Factors such as the newness of the content and its price/value should be taken into consideration.”
It will be interesting to see whether this continues in the coming years or whether this receives enough backlash to have a reversal in 2025 and beyond.
