It seems like both a lifetime ago, and at the same time only yesterday that Sony launched the PlayStation console. Yet, as of 3rd December 2024, it will have been thirty years since the very first PlayStation console launched.
So far Sony has launched five hugely successful home consoles, two handhelds with a third rumoured to be in early stages of development and two VR headsets. Sony has also adopted the PlayStation branding for numerous other electronics, most notably the PlayStation TV series for both the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3, with the latter having capabilities of outputting 3D.
So far, three of Sony’s PlayStation home consoles have sold more than 100 million units, with the PlayStation 2 selling to date 160 million, making it the best selling console of all time, though Nintendo could still take that crown with the Switch still selling decent numbers. With the PlayStation 5 selling pretty well, although perhaps not the numbers many had hoped, it is still likely to hit that 100 million sales milestone. In 2025, assuming there are no delays, Rockstar will be launching the latest in one of the biggest selling franchises in entertainment, GTA VI. We have no doubt GTA VI will see huge boosts to the PlayStation 5 sales.
Ahead of next week’s 30th anniversary of PlayStation, Sony has launched a website celebrating the entire line of systems.
